The sorrows and troubles of the world are a direct result of mankind’s self-will and self-reliance. From the very beginning of human history, the first humans decided to do things their way as opposed to God’s perfect way (Psalm 18:30). They chose the way of self-will and self-reliance. The problem with that is that human beings have been wired to live in accordance with God’s will. God is not going to force anyone to do his will. We all must gladly choose his will in preference to our own. Whenever we do so, we are in harmony with the purpose for which we have been created. Life becomes exciting and enjoyable as opposed to being frustrating and unfulfilling. Jesus set the example when he said “For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.” (John 6:38). Self-will is evident in young children, teenagers and adults. It is the way of human nature, which will eventually lead to chaos and self-destruction. It is the source of pride and arrogance, which God resists. “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5) On the other hand, seeking to do God’s will and relying on him leads to humility, an attribute treasured by God. “This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.” (Isaiah 66:2) A long time ago before humans came on the scene, Satan chose the way of self-will and self-reliance. The result is clear for all to see! Deception and confusion. The sorrows and troubles of humanity will only cease when we stop being self-willed and self-reliant. Why should we always seek to do God’s will as stated in the anchor scripture? Because God is love, and his will for us is perfect. “Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2). Knowing God’s will is not as complicated as some may think! “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” (John 6:40).
