Forgiveness
January 1, 2023

This past week we covered the issues of un-forgiveness and forgiveness. Mathew 6:14-15 says “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses”. This is not a suggestion but a requirement, and if we are not ready and willing to forgive, we are assured that God will not forgive us for our sins.

Un-forgiveness causes hate, retaliation, revenge, anger and also causes us to involve innocent bystanders and even our own families in our anger. Plainly un-forgiveness is SIN it’s like a cancer that slowly eats you away it is destructive not only to yourself but to your marriage, family and friends, it’s a bomb waiting to blow. Many times the other person we are upset with has no idea or care about how you feel and this un-forgiveness binds you to the one who has wronged you.

Forgiveness does not excuse the sin, it calls sin, sin and holds the person accountable to acknowledge they have hurt you and that you will not retaliate against them or hate them for it, but you forgive them. We have to remember that forgiveness is done in faith; we do it not expecting anything in return if there is punishment to come God will take care of it. Romans 12:19-20 “Avenge not yourselves, beloved, but give it to the wrath of God: for it is written, vengeance belongs to me; I will recompense, says the Lord.” Give it to him don’t get in the way, it’s hard to understand the will of God but it is his promise to you.

Forgiveness or un-forgiveness is a three dimensional sin. 1) You must forgive others who have sinned against you. 2) You must be forgiven by those you have sinned against. 3) You must forgive yourself of what you have done (self- condemnation). Through the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ we are forgiven, only through repentance of all our sins including forgiveness of others, and of ourselves.

How many sins have you committed against God?
How many times has he forgiven you?
Is there someone you need to be forgiven by and you need to apologize to them?
Is there someone in your life or in your past that you need to forgive?
Forgive them, and be set free, your own forgiveness from God relies on it.
