Do You Hear What I Hear..?

Since the beginning of the year, I’ve been progressing through my Bible reading goal for the year - reading the Bible through chronologically. In the past week I’ve read the accounts of Ruth and Naomi, then progressing onto Hannah and Eli. Naomi and Hannah were such women of faith who exhibited deep character as they sought to live their lives honourably before God. I then read the account of Samuel as he grew up in the temple of the Lord.

The Scripture says, “Now in those days messages from the Lord were very rare, and visions were quite uncommon” (1 Sam 3:1b) yet as we read on, we find that Samuel was woken by the voice of the Lord. At first he did not recognise it as such, yet the Lord persisted in His call to Samuel. It was only when the older, wiser man in his life (Eli) twigged to what was happening that Samuel responded to the voice with: “Speak, for your servant is listening.” And he did. The Lord spoke and Samuel listened. Such a short story in the narrative, but an impacting one none-the-less.

In a matter of mere days, I realised I had read stories illustrating the value of listening. Ruth listened to the advice of the older, wiser woman in her life about the culture she sought to be assimilated into and in doing so provided for her and Naomi’s needs, to then later become part of the lineage of Christ.

Hannah sought to be heard of the Lord about her deep desire for children. Eli initially misunderstood her, but after taking the time to listen, prayed for her and blessed her. Hannah, having been heard by the Lord, responded with sacrificial giving. She gave her son - the young man who later heard the voice of the Lord which had been silent for so long in Israel.

Samuel also listened to the counsel of the older, wiser man in his life, Eli, when he did not know who was calling out to him. This leaves me thinking:  To whom am I listening? To whom am I speaking and is my counsel full of Godly wisdom? Who are those that I allow to speak Godly wisdom in my life?

Discernment and wisdom need to be exercised when seeking counsel. We see examples everyday of those who heed shallow counsel and the lacklustre results of that. We are blessed to that the Holy Spirit is called our Counsellor. The great news is that He’s available anywhere, anytime! There is absolutely nothing like the rhema word of God and taking time to be still, to be quiet, to ask the Lord to speak to us.

What the Lord revealed to Samuel was not an easy word, however Samuel did not run from it. He listened. He heard. He heeded. Sometimes when we hear from the Lord, it is not the ‘good news story’ or the nice, easy word we’d like. Sometimes it can be hard stuff to hear, but if we listen, if we abide in the word, and do not reject it, we open ourselves up to an ongoing conversation with God and a deeper level of intimacy with Him, because He can trust us with His ‘stuff’.

How are you listening?

My prayer:
Speak to me Lord for your child is listening. And Lord, if I’m not yet listening, please persist until I heed Your voice and know Your heart. Amen
