About This Blog...

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Col 3:12-14 NIV
“You’re done with that old life. It’s like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes you’ve stripped off and put in the fire. Now you’re dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with His label on it. All the old fashions are now obsolete.”
Col 3:9b-10 The Message

I like to get new clothes — new clothes that are well fitted, that suit my colouring and shape, and also the purpose for which I am purchasing them. I also like my old clothes and am sometimes grieved when something I have loved wearing can no longer serve their purpose. They become pilled, faded, and seams come apart. They start to lose their shape, become baggy and don’t fit like they used to. Or they don’t cover me like they once did as holes start to appear, which then turn into tears, which then… Well, you get the picture!

Sometimes it’s really hard to give up those old, familiar, comfy clothes, but it’s easier when I get something nicer, more flattering and fun to wear. One thing I notice, though, is that those new clothes never look good if I try to put them on over my old things.

God promises us new clothes that we get to put on (not just look at), and enjoy when we become His. He also shows us how ill-fitting our old clothes are, informing us what no longer suits us and tells us to take off some of the old stuff so we can beautifully model who we are in Him and what we have in Him.

What are you wearing?

Our old clothes can take on many forms. Perhaps they are rigid boundaries (or walls) which we’ve used to protect our brokenness. Perhaps they are an inaccurate, incomplete or completely wrong understanding of our identity, personality or purpose. Perhaps they are cloaks of fear, insecurity, competition…I could go on.

It's just not me anymore!

I remember a particular time in my adult life where I felt a discomfort about what I was wearing. The clothes I had were fine, functional, appropriate — all those sorts of things — however, as I said to a friend of mine, I had a growing feeling that they didn’t accurately reflect who I was anymore. As I look back, I see that at that time God had been doing a work in my heart, spirit and mind — growing me, extending me, freeing me, making me more of who I was. There was a internal transition occurring that consequently resulted in a few external changes as well, while God unfolded to me more of who I was, and how precious I was in His sight. How beautiful of God to do that!

“Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ.…” Romans 13:14

Out With the Old, On With the New

It’s necessary, at various points, to go through our wardrobe to cull garments that have outlived their usefulness, or which no longer have ‘life’ in them. Sometimes that can be painful, because, amongst the waft and weave of the fabric’s threads, memories have also been woven in; but it is also so very freeing. Putting off the old releases room — space to breathe, room to add something new. The same is true for us spiritually and emotionally.

What ‘old clothes’ do you need to put off — behaviours, beliefs, relationships, habits — that God is saying to you belongs to the ‘old life’?

What ‘new clothes’ is God making available to you?

Go on, put them on. They’re gonna look good on you!
