2011-06: Wooing and Pursuing Love

About This Blog...

Over the last couple of months, I’ve been undertaking a study of the word ‘love’ in the Bible, centring on God’s love.

The Bible tells us God’s love is “of old”.  It is long standing, time tested and a fixture in His character.  Psalm 25:6-10 says that His love is like a lens in a pair of glasses through which He looks at us.  The filter of His love affects the way He sees us, judges our sin and determines His dealings with us.  In fact, it affects every aspect of His interaction with us.

Scripture after Scripture mentions His unfailing love.  While often we think this to mean that His love doesn’t fail (which is true) in my study I dug out another gem.. The Hebrew word generally translated ‘unfailing’ means “a strong sense of goodwill, especially evidenced in times of need”.  It means mercy, kindness and, another word we don’t often use – benevolent

I’ve decided I really like the word ‘benevolent’.  I picture a person with that characteristic as one with a radiant smile on their lips, kindness in their eyes, generosity and tenderness in their hands and wisdom flowing from their mouth.  In fact the dictionary defines benevolence as “expressing goodwill or kindly feelings; desiring to help others intended for benefits rather than profit; charitable”. It describes someone who is always looking out for the good of others, rather than trying to gather benefits for themselves. This is our God and this is an expression of His love.

Psalm 26:3 says “…for [God’s] love is ever before me, and I walk continually in Your truth.”  Psalm 23 tells us, Surely goodness, mercy and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life…”  Before and behind, we are hedged by God’s love.  What a secure place to be!

As I meditated on these verses further, a picture was created in my mind’s eye of a little ‘me’ on life's winding road.  In front of me there’s a big fire of God's love, like that which led the Israelites in the desert.  It lights my path so I see where to step.  It warms and encourages my heart and gives me confidence to progress.  Behind me, shielding and blanketing me, there is a generous cloud of His goodness, mercy and benevolence.

With all the twists and turns of life, we never know what’s around the next corner, but He does.  His love precedes us, leads us and woos us.  As we stay in that love and walk in the truth of His Word, we remain stable and secure and upright.  Following behind us, God’s goodness and mercy brings tangible evidence of His love in our life.

I pray that then, this expression of His love through my life, via example and witness, testimony and fruitfulness, will result in leaving a lingering fragrance from which others will benefit as well.

I challenge all of us to be on the look out for His wooing love and His pursuing love through the day-to-day situations in which we’re involved, and to respond with awe and vibrant praise.

No-one loves quite like God!
