2011-04: The Choice to Choose

About This Blog...

Recently I heard Erwin McManus speak on a Joyce Meyer program.  There were a couple of things he said that day, that have been like gum on my shoe ever since.

"We think we want the freedom to choose, rather than make the choices that bring freedom."  He went on to say that one of the greatest spiritual acitivities we do each day is to choose.

In a culture which desires voracious freedoms with little or no accountability, which bandies around phrases that diminish responsibility, like, “I had no choice”, or those which seek only self-gratification: “It’s my choice – I can do whatever I want”, it’s a very refreshing statement.

But it’s not a new thought.

Right back in Deuteronomy, God said, “I place before you life and death, blessings and curses.  Choose life…so you will live.”  Pretty simple.  Rather straightforward.

Later in Joshua, another succinct choice was portrayed: “…choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served…or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD…”

It’s a truth – we do have choices and our choices have consequences.  This past week, I’ve chosen to make an intentional choice about certain responses and attitudes – the way I think, what I say, what I declare, what I’ll expect. I can choose to think, expect, believe, behave just as the culture does or as my humanity might dictate, or I can make choices that will gain perspective, add vitality and result in joy. I’ve called them my “I choose” statements of the day.  Let me share a few…

I choose…Life.
Deut 30:19. What can I choose today that will help me live better, longer, more fulfilled – physically/nutritionally, financially, relationally, spiritually? What can I do/say today that will be life to another?

I choose…to believe that all things are possible. Mark 9:23. Bad reports, impending deadlines, closed doors or facing lack are not hindrances to what God can and will do.

I choose…thankfulness. Ps 106:1. Instead of focusing on what isn’t going well today, to choose to focus on what is.

I choose…rest.  Is 28:23, Jer 31:25, Matt 11:28. Whether it’s saying “that’s enough work for today”, or leaning in greater dependence and trust upon God; despite the “to-do” lists, the desire for an answer or to understand – at the end of myself, is where He can take over.

I choose…to hope.  Rom 4:18-21. I love the example of Abraham.  “Human reason for hope being gone,” Abraham chose to believe his God, not his circumstances.

I choose…to behave more like a daughter & think less like a slave. Gal 4:6-7. My view of God, how I per-ceive His view of me, either empowers or hinders how I live.

I choose…to choose how I will respond to situations.  I choose to choose the ways of God, not the ways of the “norm”.  I choose to live a life that will bring genuine freedom and not those choices which will keep me from it.

Having started out the day deciding to make right choices, I at times find myself choosing unbelief, complaint, compulsion to hurry, or to despair.  The good news is I can choose not to stay there.  The best news is, that I don’t have to try and make it happen on my own, because God chooses to be my companion and my ever-present help in times of need.  All I need to do is choose to call out, “Help!”

Today, what do you choose?
