2010-10: A God to be Known

About This Blog...

I’ve set 1 John as an assignment for one of the young women with whom I meet.  It’s a little book, yet a rich treasure trove of truth.  I call it one of the “love” books, as it details God’s love for us, exhorts us to love our brothers and sisters in Christ and to spread His love and light into places of darkness.

The opening words are pure testimony – “…that which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes…which we have touched – this  we proclaim…so that you also may have fellowship with us.  And our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son.”

Of course the disciples physically heard, saw and touched the Person of Jesus Christ.  They travelled with Him, ate with Him. They even went fishing with Him!  They knew what they were talking about because they knew Who they were talking about!  Theirs wasn’t merely good theoretical knowledge, but experiential relationship. Can we too, give such a testimony?

God wants to be known, not just known about. Knowledge is good, but it’s not everything. Experience is good, but it’s not everything. (1Cor 8:1-3 AMP)  Balance is key – having a good Biblical foundation which frames my understanding of Who God is, what He is doing in my life personally, and in the world generally.

I have listened to much pontificating about the theories of God, yet found that the power comes when I “see”, “hear”, and am “touched” by the Person of God.  I can study many principles, but may not be stirred personally.  I can educate myself on numerous Biblical doctrines, yet I know that I know them when I see fruit flourish from their application to my everyday situation – when I experience the power of the Truth made real and relevant in my life.

I think that testimony combined with the power of the Word, is…well...POWERFUL!  Just yesterday I heard a lady share how Jesus has touched her life.  It convicted me about areas in which I’ve left certain prayers unprayed.  It gave me great hope and encouragement that God is at work even when we don’t see it (yet!) with physical eyes.

Verse four of 1 John 1 says: “We write this to make our joy complete.” And it’s true.  There’s something so joy-filling when I have opportunity to share what God has done in my life.  It helps shine light into those areas of my existence which are currently dark.  I also find my joy “complete” as I see the “lights go on” in another’s life as I open up my life to them.

What have you heard from the Lord?  How have you seen Him work in your life?  In what ways has the Holy Spirit touched you – physically, emotionally..?

Make your joy complete – tell someone your story.
