The story behind - "Meant to Be"
Ephesians 1:17-19a; Romans 11:29
This song wouldn’t leave me alone. At three o’clock in the morning it would pester me. A little voice was, in effect, saying, “I demand to be heard!” So insistent was it, I was compelled to get out of my warm bed and head to the music room until the voice inside was satisfied. I’m one of those people who like to do a bit of people-watching now and then. I find myself thinking about what they’re doing at that moment and why, where they’re going, what they are going through… As an introvert, I often reflect on things that I’ve been through but I also regularly contemplate those things that people I know are facing, have faced, decisions they’ve had to make, and I consider the ways in which we either respond or react in various situations. As I’ve sung this song in different contexts to different audiences, I’ve found the listeners interpret the characters in different ways. Just like almost any song we hear, we insert our own story. Often times I’ve been asked if the individuals in verse one and two become the couple that is spoken of in verse three? (Perhaps these questioners are the true romantics amongst us. ;) ) Whether the characters are or not is up to you to decide. For me, they are separate entities who have faced various choices - just as we all do. And just like we all do, sometimes we make mistakes and sometimes we don’t. But when we turn to Jesus, we find grace. We find hope. We find purpose. We find destiny. We find never-ending love. All of us have been given a gift and a mission for this life. Some pursue it and others run from it. There are costs. There are victories. There are battles. There are losses. But there’s no greater call in life - nothing better - than being who we’ve been called to be and what God’s called us to be. “The gifts and call of God are irrevocable” (Rom 11:29) and He never leaves us without the provisions to do what it is He has asked of us. It’s His desire for us to truly be - Just Be. Be His. Be loved. Be at peace. Be who He has created us to be. As we keep our eyes fixed and focused on He Who has called, equipped and released us to be, we find His ‘well done’ all along the way. As the song says: “May the eyes of your (our) heart(s) be enlightened now and always to His hope and purpose. The riches of His glory, the power of His grace, the inheritance, the surety - to fulfil His call.” “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people, and His incomparably great power for us who believe.” Eph 1:17-19a
